Bangkok Makan Places
Makan Time !!... Eating places in Bangkok
What else will Singaporeans want to do after all the shopping?
‘Yaowarat’ Chinatown Area:
- Go in the night, when all the roadside stalls come alive!
- Tourists like the roadside BBQ seafood
- There’s this Shark-fin & bird nest stall just before Watsons (the only Watsons in Yaowarat, right side of the one-way road). They used to operate from 2 red pickups, park along the road. Try their Shark fin, have a claypot each & enjoy!! They now have a shop front with lots chairs inside, to serve more customers in a more comfortable environment.
- If you prefer air-conditioned environment & pay in ‘plastics’, go to Nam Sing Sharks fins & Birdnest Restaurant. The first right lane of Yaowarat main thoroughfare. They now have a new outlet right on the main Yaowarat road.
- Always double check your bill before paying....
- Try the Fresh Oysters too, the Thai way of eating the giant morsel with loads of fresh condiments. For only B$35 a piece, mix the fried onions ,chilli ,lemon and some 'memosa-looking' leaves. Mix everything together and eat !!
- Taxi from Asia Hotel is about B$50 to B$60 max (approx S$2.50)
-
Bird nest:
Ø Try Nam-Sing (loosely translated, Southern Star). A descent looking aircon restaurant, off the main Yaowarat. One of the better & affordable ones in the area. Going for 300-500 baht a bowl. Different grades of birdnest. The B$300 ones is fine with me…
-
Fruits:
Ø Do not buy them along the streets, they slaughter tourist! Get your fruits from supermarket in MBK instead.
-
Local Kway-teow stall:
Ø A very popular roadside stall on the right side of the main road.
Ø Located at the front section of Yaowarat. Before the first side road on the right.
Ø Serves very tasty black-sauce kway-teow, with lots of bean sprouts, mushrooms, slices of pork & cuttlefish.
Ø WARNING: you will be addicted once you try!!!
Ø You will fins a picture of the Thai Princess patronizing it.
Ø Still there lots of people queuing up for it…
Authentic Thai Food: Ban-Khoon-Mae
- Located across the main entrance of Hotel Novotel Siam Square, in Siam Square. Diagonally to the right of the main hotel entrance. Siam Square shopping district is across the street from MBK.
- On the outside, it looks like a 2 story cottage house. If still cannot find, ask the concierge at Novotel Siam Square.
- Serve very shiok Green Curry, Fried or steam fish, prawns, papaya salad(Somtom) & the must try Tom-yum Gong.
- Prices are affordable & reasonable to tourist like us. If not crowded, the service is excellent!!
- Can sign your plastic instead of paying cash!!
Food Court Style:
- 6th flr of MBK serves ones of the best selections of BKKians daily meals. One would be able to find anything & everything at very reasonable prices there.
- An excellent to place to get orientated to what the locals eat everyday, very safe place to have all your meals settled here.
- Coupon style transaction. Buy coupons first & redeem unused portion later after meals. Do not keep for another day, its only valid for one day.
- Recommended Must Try:
- Beef Soup with rice or kway-tiao- sold by Thai Chinese
- Pork Leg Rice- 2 stalls of equally good quality & taste
- Mangoes or durian with sticky rice- near the dessert stall (very shiok!!!)
- Pad-Thai – Thai fried rice noodles; available in most stalls. Remember to munch the bean sprouts & fresh chives as you savor the dish.
- Fish or meat balls soup with bee-hoon or kway-tiao
- Spicy Thai Papaya salad – SomTom; look out for stalls with wooden mortar pounding away. Must ask for “not spicy”, or else you’ll be flying to the moon after the first bite!!! Their chilli padi is nuclear packed!
- Typical Thai Ice tea with milk- it has this fragrance that our S’pore Ice teas do not have….
- Fried oyster - cheaper than Spore’s price…
- Green or red curry with rice- hawker price here. Like our chup-chai rice.
